With Sydney Harbour and the Opera House as a backdrop, we are proud to be part of the “Light Sculptures” on display at Circular Quay for this year’s “Vivid Sydney”. Vivid Sydney is a “canvas of light, music and ideas that colours the city with creativity and inspiration”.
Despite the despicably wet and windy conditions, our fearless technicians – Ted and Razali (on secondment from Singapore) – braved the elements to install the Jelli-Lights in readiness for the official launch on Friday 27th May.
Here’s what the Vivid Sydney website says:
22) Jellight by Simon Lee, Aamer Taher & Pascal Petitjean [AUSTRALIA, SINGAPORE, FRANCE]
Jellight giant jellyfish float magically above our harbour in this film like installation. The artists created these imaginative light Jellies for you to imagine them floating away from earth. The sculptural, eliptical light balloons depict jellyfish departing the polluted oceans to escape into the universe as ‘reverse UFOs’. The colourful light emanates from the robust lighting balloons producing 360-degree non-glare light sources.
French lighting designer Pascal Petitjean, co-creator of Lighting Balloons, teams with Australian film light expert Simon Lee and Singapore architect Aamer Taher. Petitjean has been involved with projects such as The Titanic and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Lee has been involved with lighting films including Moulin Rouge, King Kong, Australia and Avatar. Taher trained at London’s School of Architecture and is a council member of the Singapore Institute of Architects.
